UN aid agencies in coup-hit Niger are scrambling to make contingency plans to eke out depleting stocks of food, medicines and fuel even as sanctions threaten to increase the number of people in need, the U.N. humanitarian chief in Niger warned on Tuesday. Over 4 million people were already targeted for UN emergency assistance in the impoverished West African country before the July 26 power grab led to border and airspace closures, squeezing vital humanitarian supplies.
